Town of North East Allocates Funding for Water Infrastructure Improvements
North East, MD – The Town of North East continues its commitment to enhancing critical infrastructure by allocating $3,305,994.15 in funding from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and water grants provided by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These investments will improve the Town’s water treatment and distribution systems, ensuring reliable service and enhanced water quality for residents and businesses, all without impacting the Town’s budget.
Powdered Activated Carbon
Advanced filtration technology will be implemented at the Rolling Mill and Leslie Water Treatment Plants to enhance water treatment and purification processes. This technology is primarily used for total organic carbon removal to lower TTHM and HAA5 levels, while also improving taste and odor.
Leslie Water Treatment Plant Sediment Removal
Sediment accumulated in the water treatment pond at the Leslie Water Treatment Plant will be removed to regain its original storage capacity and allow more time for raw water to settle out before entering the plant, thereby maintaining optimal performance and water quality.
SCADA Infrastructure
Installation Advanced Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems will be installed to improve efficiency, automation, and monitoring capabilities at the Town’s Water Treatment Plants.
Westover Place Watermain Upgrade
The Town has upgraded aging watermain infrastructure in the Westover Place area to improve water distribution and reliability.
Essential Equipment
The Town also acquired essential equipment, including water meters, turbidity meters, valves, transmitters, analyzers, and clarifiers, along with updates to the 20-year master plan, aimed at enhancing water treatment processes and ensuring high-quality water services. Additionally, the Town obtained a tow-behind generator and manual emergency power switches to pumping stations, allowing for electricity supply during prolonged power outages. This need was identified in the Town’s vulnerability assessment conducted a few years ago.
Total Investment in Water Infrastructure: $3,305,994.15
These projects emphasize the Town of North East’s dedication to improving public infrastructure and maintaining high-quality water services. The strategic use of ARPA funds, along with external grants, will ensure the completion of these improvements without utilizing the Town’s general fund.
