Town of North East Announces Police Department Improvement Projects Funded by ARPA
North East, MD — The Town of North East is pleased to announce a series of critical improvement projects for the North East Police Department (NEPD), all funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). These projects, were selected because they will enhance the safety, efficiency, and operational capacity of the NEPD to better serve the growing needs of the community.
NEPD Administration Building
In response to the department’s expansion and the increasing demands of modern policing, the former North East Branch of the Cecil County Public Library building at 106 West Cecil Avenue is being transformed into a new administrative facility for the NEPD. This renovation will provide essential space for improved operations, accommodating both current staff and future growth. The project includes design, new furniture, and construction.
Secure Laptops for the Entire Department
To improve mobility and ensure secure, reliable access to critical information in the field, the NEPD is outfitting all officers with new, secure laptops. In accordance with standards, officers must receive new laptops every few years. This investment in technology, funded through ARPA, strengthens the department’s ability to respond quickly and effectively in critical situations, while relieving pressure on the general fund budget.
Procurement of Personal Equipment for Officers
As part of the NEPD’s ongoing commitment to officer safety and readiness, new Tasers, portable radios, rifles, pistols, and body armor have been purchased. These vital tools enhance officer performance and protection in the line of duty. The Town leveraged ARPA funding for this necessary equipment upgrade, helping preserve the general fund budget.
Two New Police Vehicles
To enhance the NEPD’s fleet, two new police vehicles have been acquired to support the addition of two new officers as the department continues to grow. These vehicles offer increased flexibility and capability for emergency response and community patrols.
Total Investment in Police Department Improvements: $519,718.02
The Town of North East remains committed to supporting its law enforcement officers by providing the tools, technology, and infrastructure necessary to protect and serve the community effectively. These improvements, made possible through ARPA funding, ensure that local resources can address critical public safety needs.
