Welcome to North East
Located at the headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay, North East is less than an hour drive from Philadelphia and Baltimore.
Settled by the English in 1658, the Town of North East was incorporated in 1850. The southern part of town covers a site once occupied by Shawnee Indians. North East was the first permanent settlement in Cecil County. The cemetery at Saint Mary Anne’s Episcopal Church located on Main Street is one of the oldest in the State of Maryland with graves of Susquehannock Indians dating to the 1600’s.
Strolling down Main Street, visitors will discover an inviting mix of locally owned shops, featuring everything from artisanal goods and handcrafted antiques to boutique treasures. The town’s culinary scene is equally impressive, offering a divine variety of seafood dishes, savory steaks, and other delicious fare that capture the spirit and flavor of the Upper Bay. Every dining experience comes with a side of small-town charm.
Just a short walk from Main Street lies the North East Community Park, the recreational crown jewel of our community. Overlooking the scenic waters of the North East River, the park features panoramic waterfront views, modern playground and exercise equipment, and expansive open spaces perfect for picnics, sports, and leisurely strolls. Whether you’re watching the sunset along the pier or attending one of the many local events hosted here, the park offers the perfect place to unwind and connect with nature.
At the end of Walnut Street, visitors will also find the Upper Bay Museum, home to one of the region’s largest collections of hunting, fishing, and maritime memorabilia—a must-see for anyone interested in the area’s rich heritage.
A short drive from town brings even more opportunity for outdoor adventure, with Elk Neck State Park, Turkey Point Lighthouse, and Elk Neck State Forest offering miles of scenic trails, breathtaking overlooks, and countless opportunities for recreation and exploration.
